I have nothing to say.

Early morning sun was turned the waters of Dogwood Pond a lovely shade of golden orange and created sharp shadows along the edges of the forest. The contrast created a strange natural beauty that was only visible for a few moments each morning. In the shadow of a large elm tree, sitting between the roots was a burly tabby tom with sharp amber eyes. He was the definition of what kittypets expected a wildcat to look like, large muscles rippling beneath a messy coat riddled with the scars of past battles. His ears, jagged with rips and nicks, were pressed back against his skull as he watched a heron snap a fish out of the water, disturbing its golden sheen. His name was Bearshadow, and his irritation could easily be singled back to one thing. He had asked his young apprentice to meet him there before first light and yet, here he was, alone as the sun began its climb into the sky. Cherrypw was likely a good match for him, as they both had somewhat powerful personalities, and from what little experience he had with her so far, it was likely he would need it. That was alright with him, he decided quickly, he would turn her into a good warrior if it killed them both. Still, she would be cleaning ticks in the elders den for the next moon if she didn't show herself soon. He stood as the heron took to the air, and padded out into the sunlight to watch it fly off. The sun felt good on his pelt, and he stretched, digging his claws into the soft earth. He glanced at his paws and pondered for a moment the extra toe on each of his fore paws. Certainly, they had benefits, but it was such a bizarre trait that he rarely took time to ponder. He was content to believe it was a blessing from StarClan. A low sigh escaped him as he turned his attention back to the woods and to waiting.

Cherrypaw ran out from the forest, making lots of noise. Her brown fur was rustled and messy from the thorns. "Sorry, Bearshadow! I forgot about the lesson because I was mad at my denmates," she explained.

Bearshadow scowled as his apprentice came crashing from the woods, and forced back the angry scolding he desired to give her. He got to his feet without and licked his shoulder quickly, smoothing down a piece of fur that was sticking out. "No excuses," He growled finally, "Be on time next time or you'll be cleaning ticks for the elders and tending their bedding while your denmates are at the gathering. And try not to scare off all the prey next time, would you?" He turned his back on her, padding toward the tree he had been sitting beneath. He leaped up onto the trunk and skillfully climbed up into the low branches. "Up here. Now," He ordered harshly, "We were going to work on your hunting, but since that is no longer an option, you'll be practicing your climbing this morning."

Cherrypaw sighed, embarrassed with herself. She scrambled up the tree onto the branch. She hoped she wouldn't actually have to clean the elders and their ticks. She shuddered.

Bearshadow glowered at his apprentice, then turned his eyes to the top of the tree. He decided it was time for her to get some muscle building. "Climb up as far as you can and back down again," He ordered, "And then do it again, only go a branch higher." He flicked his tail up, gesturing for her to begin. After he had gotten his point across, they would do some battle training in the undergrowth, and he would send her on a quick hunt before dinner. An easy day in his opinion, leaving him with enough time to nap and join the moonhigh patrol.

Cherrypaw scrambled up the tree, only making it ten branches up. She slowly climbed down to the bottom branch. She then went up again, making it twelve branches up. She climbed down again, a little faster. Cherrypaw repeated this until she got almost to the top of the tree.

"Good enough, I suppose," The dark colored tabby grunted, "I hope that'll show you why punctuality is important." With a single leap, Bearshadow found himself back on the springy forest floor. He had to admit he was impressed with how quickly she took to the climb, and decided he needed to find a new challenge for her. He beckoned her with a flick of his tail, and padded over to the sand water's edge. He had done little training in her fighting skills, and it was time for that to change. "I want you to take your best shot at me," he told her calmly, "No claws, but don't expect me to go easy on you." He tensed his muscles and watched her, preparing for her to strike.

Cherrypaw gulped. She looked at Bearshadow's shoulder, planning to strike there. She leaped at him.

More nimbly than one would expect of a cat his size, Bearshadow sidestepped his young apprentice. He reared and aimed to shove her toward the pond, a rough hiss escaping him as he did so. Too obvious. Perhaps a dousing in the chilled waters would get some sense into her. He spun to watch her though narrowed eyes. "Honestly, try not to be so obvious!" He snapped, "Looking where you are aiming is a dead give away! Try again."

Cherrypaw stood back up, her pelt wet. She looked at Bearshadow and fixed her gaze on his stomach. She padded forward and then sprang to the side, smacking his flank.

The warrior huffed as the young apprentice's paw cam in contact with his side. She had struck him, certainly, but she would need more training to get the force behind the strike that he could tell she was capable of. Without a moment's hesitation the hulking tabby reared up and swung his paws at his apprentice, careful to only use half his strength. Bearshadow was glad that she was learning quickly, it would make his job as a mentor much easier in the long run.

Cherrypaw slithered underneath Bearshadow and through his legs.
