Burnpaw crouched down, finally a harder move. With a mock screech, Burnpaw lunged forward and with another screech she leaped onto Panthershade's back. Burnpaw unsheathed her claws trying to keep from rolling off, but was careful not to sink them into Panthershade's skin. Burnpaw pretended to beat Panthershade's flanks with her paws but was careful to just touch the fur and to not sink her claws in, using her hind claws to cling there. However, as she was doing that she lost her balance and topple off. She managed to twist around and land barely and clumsily on her paws but had fallen off all the same. "Fox dung!" Burnpaw snapped, leaping to her paws angrily.

We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one.

Panthershade was beginning to feel concerned for his apprentice. She seemed so put out by every mistake. It was natural for apprentices to strive to prove themselves, but Burnpaw was being too hard on herself.
"You managed to get a few good blows in." He commented, shaking out his ruffled pelt. "Not only that, but you landed on your paws when you lost your balance. That would have given you an exponential advantage in a fight."

Burnpaw shrugged, she didn't see it as some big accomplishment. "I want to try it again," Burnpaw growled. She leaped back onto Panthershade's back and sank her claws in, careful not to hurt her mentor. She then began to hit his flanks again, still careful not to hurt him. When she began tipping to the side she used her tail to help her lean the other way. When she began tipping over on that side, she used her tail again. It seemed for the moment she would do good and stay on, but then suddenly she toppled off and was barely able to roll back on her paws and leap up suddenly. She growled, baring her fangs angrily. Why was it so hard to even stay on!

"You're getting it!' Panthershade encouraged, even as he stumbled slightly under the weight of his apprentice. He could feel the way her body swayed, and a quick glance behind him revealed the thrashing orange tail of his apprentice. She was using it to maintain her balance. Panthershade stifled a purr; Burnpaw was brilliant. Even with such a difficult move, she was already devising ways to improve herself.
"Don't be dissapointed." He admonished once she was on the ground once again. "You stayed up quite a bit longer that time. As I said; this is quite the difficult move, and you will progress with practice in both strength and balance." He stepped forward to brush his tail on her shoulder. "Relax. You're doing fine. Better than that, actually."

Burnpaw still didn't feel so sure. Why couldn't she get this? Burnpaw leaned back on her haunches, thinking. She basked in his praise, at least he thought sh was doing well, but she still had her doubts. Well she did figure out her tail could help her, but it wasn't enough. She would still keeping tipping and it only got harder to maintain balance as the move progressed. "I'll try again." Burnpaw leaped back onto Panthershade's back and proceeded to beat at his flanks with her paws. Her tail whipped left and right to keep her balance but it grew harder to stay on. With a grunt fell off him onto her side and was able to fluidly roll herself over to her paws as soon as she hit the ground; she leaped to her paws instantly. Her fur bristled angrily. "I can't do this!" she spat, anger burning through her pelt.

Panthershade stiflied a sigh. Clearly, his apprentice couldn't be satisfied with herself, in spite of how well she had done. Panthershade only wished Burnpaw wouldn't be so hard on herself. This was her first lesson of many, and she had progressed a lot. Perhaps it would be best to end the lesson now, considering it was getting dark anyway. Tomorrow, Panthershade could start with something less skill-based. A tour of the territory, perhaps?
Then again, that might not be the wisest idea in light of the recent findings. Panthershade would have to think it over tonight.
"You can, and you will." Panthershade replied, voice firm. "Don't limit yourself like that. This is only your first lesson. You've done fine, and there is still plenty of time to improve." He looked up. Above them, the sky glowed dimly through the trees, a soft lavender. "We should be getting back." He continued, looking back to his apprentice. He offered a warm smile. "You did very well, Burnpaw. I'm impressed. We can continue training tomorrow, depending on what I can schedule."
