End up dreaming instead of sleeping.

“It’s not funny.” Poe said in a small voice. “I lived wild for four weeks as a kitten and believe me that was taste enough for me.” Not wanting to sound like a coward she continued quickly; “I have all the warmth and as much food as I can eat. I don’t know why any cat would give that up.”
She glanced over at the kitten, and finally there was a name to put to the face; Bast. Surely the kitten would understand being a housecat. Something about the kitten’s words left more doubt than certainty in Poe’s mind. She belonged with her humans so why did she find her gaze drawn to her paws as if she walked the lesser path.

Bast snapped out of her thoughts. It was undignified to be a feral and get her fur messy and dirt with the harder life. "I've been a kittypet my whole life and I've never been more content," Bast knew that was a lie, but she wasn't sure if she was lying to the two cats or herself. "Besides, if being a feral means I have to scrounge for my food in the trash then I'll stick where I am." She declared, tapping her paw against the ground to emphasize her point.

Dot woke up inside her owner's home. She went outside into the garden and leaped onto the fence. "What's going on down there?" She called. She sighed contentedly.

Lily's ears twitched, feeling resentment crawl under her skin at the cats standing before her. Should I really criticize them? The thought danced around her brain as she examined the small pieces of meat. The brown she-cat started to feel like they were right about themselves. Maybe they weren't made to be feral, and maybe she hadn't been either. Her lip curled with a sudden flare of anger. There was no world she could walk in, she had to live like this. The she-cat was burning with an anger that numbed her paws, and started feeling trapped in her own skin. This was a mistake. I need to leave, now! Lily stood, her ears bent back in discomfort as she scented another newcomer. Her blue gaze rested on the kitten named Bast. "Keep telling yourself that kitten. Maybe one day you might actually be able to convince yourself." Her words were cool as she spoke them. Lily gazed back towards Poe, admiring the young she-cats delicate features. "It was very nice meeting you both, but I best get going." She mewed softly, licking her paw and rubbing it gently past her cheek. "It's obvious now that someone like me should never be around cats like the two of you. I'm wild! You shouldn't trust me to watch your back while you make dirt!"

“Make dirt… like out here in the open?” Poe huffed and crouched down slightly. “Why would we want anyone watching us make dirt in the first place?”
Leaving it made sense, and she hardly knew this stranger but a pang of loneliness crawled through her nonetheless, friends could be hard to come by. She waited, eyes on her paws for this Lily to up and leave, a moment ago and even as she said the words there had been nothing to suggest a closeness to fleeing. The shard of warmth made Poe brave enough to speak again.
“You don’t seem so bad to me.” She looked back to where their smaller companion had stood a moment earlier. Please don’t leave me with just a kitten for company.

Lily's blue gaze softened, amused by the she-cats words. I shouldn't be so rash..She thought momentarily. A warm rush melted away the anger she had felt only moments before. She shuffled her paws, getting comfortable, despite her longing to run from the slowly growing group of cats. Who knew there were so many kittypets running around in the dead of night? The urge to be wild and free must still run through their veins. To adventure out of their homes while everyone else slept was quite adventurous. "Where else would you be making dirt? Surely not in those stuffy boxes!" She wrinkled her nose in amusement. There was still so much of kittypet life she didn't understand, or so much she had given up. "Isn't there anything about the outside that seems enticing to you?" A light breeze ruffled her brown pelt, bringing the scents of dewy grass.

Bast averted her gaze which was something she usually didn't do. She was still not ready to admit to herself that the wild called to her. She looked back up to meet Lily's gaze. confidence showed once more. "I make dirt outside," Bast spoke softly. There was no reason to lie. She considered it disgraceful to all cats to bow down completely to twolegs and so to honor them she refused to use those boxes. And besides it was easier since she spent most of her time outside anyway, only coming in on those harshest days whether it was cold or hot or even raining.

Lily let out a mrrow of amusement at the young cats response. Her icy blue gaze narrowed with warmth at Basts' liveliness. The brown she-cat never would have thought that she'd find such interesting cats hanging around twoleg place. Some were lazy, some territorial, but most never paid much mind to her wandering paws. "You hold a lot of promise, young kittypet." She purred. "Twolegs are such mouse-brained fools." Resentment still beat in her heart towards the Twolegs who had stolen her, then abandoned her altogether. They would never make it out in the wild. Their paws were to clumsy to catch prey; they didn't have any basic instinct for survival that she could tell. Lily's ears flattened at the thought of a pack of lumbering twolegs rummaging through the woods. Such senseless fools!
