It's better to light a match than to curse the darkness

Hazelfoot padded silently through the fallen leaves, making her way around bushes and trees with the ease of one who has been walking the route for so long that they can do it with their eyes closed. As indeed she had- the silver tabby had been walking this route since she was an apprentice, and the pond was one of her favourite places. It was quite possible that this had something to do with her liking for fresh fish. Still, whether this was true or not, the fact remained that she was just emerging from the undergrowth to walk down to the edge of the pond when a rustling in the leaves attracted her attention. The silver tabby turned her head sharply and listened for a moment, her sharp eyes probing for the source of the noise. With quick steps that, were things otherwise, one could call catlike, she trotted across the distance separating her from the mouse. She paused for a moment, then she pounced... and the creature vanished from right under her paws. Hazelfoot sighed, then made her way to the bank and stretched out a paw into the water. She watched the surface intently.

We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one.

Fluttershine was startled from her aimless musing by a shriek. It was high with fear, but hardly noticeable. The disturbance was quickly followed by a rustling of leaves, and a flash of dusty brown shot by her paws. Before she could leap after it, the mouse had disappeared into the bushes. Weird.
Turning back in the direction it had fled from, Fluttershine saw a flicker of bright silver through the bushes. She trotted forward, not really thinking to test the scent. Her carelessness was of no consequence, however, as it was one of her clanmates. Who seemed oddly entranced with the water, almost as if she were about to pluck a fish out. Maybe she would. Though Fluttershine herself had never shown much promise with fishing, she knew some of her clanmates were rather skilled at the practice.
She didn't want to startle Hazelfoot if she was concentrating, so she kept her voice low. "Hi, Hazelfoot!"

Quiet as the sound was, it still caused Hazelfoot to almost topple into the rippling waters of the pond- so intense was her concentration. She recovered herself- just about- and turned to meet the cat who had disturbed her fishing with good grace. "Hi, Fluttershine." she greeted the other cat with a gentle purr. "Can I help you?" Hazelfoot had been a medicine cat for only a relatively short period of time, but she was already aware that the majority of cats who approached her did so because they wanted help. Not all, by any means, but Hazelfoot was not exactly the most popular cat in the forest and she didn't really have particular friends, although she got on well with most cats. The fact that she had been living a somewhat separate life to that enjoyed by her Clanmates since she was an apprentice had only exonerated that.

A flush of embarassment caused her fur to prickle and ears to pin to her head. Thank Starclan, Hazelfoot didn't seem angry. Encouraged by the molly's kind tone, Fluttershine responded, "I was just out hunting." Saying it felt so odd. Only a quarter moon ago, she would have been in terrible trouble if she were found in the forest on her own. Now, she could hunt and roam whenever she pleased, to an extent. "Or, trying to. I haven't found anything yet, though I think I scared a mouse a few moments ago." She shuffled her paws, suddenly feeling rather hesitant. How did one make conversation with a medicine cat? They were always so busy, it seemed rude to disturb her with aimless conversation. Then again, she didn't appear to be bothered by Fluttershine's intrusion. "I'm sorry I startled you." She turned a curious gaze to the water, wondering how many silvery fish twisted about beneath the glassy surface. "Were you... fishing?"

Hazelfoot watched the other cat's ears flatten and winced, hoping that she hadn't made Fluttershine nervous. She never tried to worry others, but it happened occasionally. She nodded as the young warrior told her that she'd been hunting. No surprises there, then. Her mentor had often remarked that the Clan spent most of its life hunting. while this probably wasn't strictly true, she could certainly see the reasoning behind it.
"No, no, I scared the mouse." Hazelfoot reassured Fluttershine with a smile. "Tried to catch it and stood on a twig." She had't hunted herself in quite a while, and she was definitely out of practice. Really, she ought to do it more often- she felt lazy. And she was lazy as well; she was ashamed to admit that she spent more time lying in then sun than dealing with injured cats. "And don't worry about it- there are plenty more fish. Yes, I was fishing."
