It's better to light a match than to curse the darkness

Hazelfoot padded quietly around her den, moving mouthfuls of herbs from place to place. This was by way of being a regular ritual for the medicine cat, who had had little else to occupy her time with in recent moons. She rationalised it by pointing out that it was bad for herbs to sit still and stagnate in one place- they'd go stale, get stuck in cracks... Whether this was actually true or not was a matter of no consequence. It made Hazelfoot feel useful, and she seldom got to enjoy that feeling. She could really do with something else to occupy her time... Not that she was wishing for a battle of an outbreak of whitecough- Starclan forbid!- but just a few scrapes, or a cold, or even a queen giving birth... Something to do!Starclan, she was so bored! Bitter Note: Sorry, this is possibly a little short.

Mimickit padded to the medicine cat's den. She was going to enter like she owned the den, but she was stopped in her tracks at the sight of Hazelfoot silently shuffling back and forth around her nest. Questions immediately formed in Mimickit's head. Was this what medicine cats do? What was Hazelfoot even doing? Either way, Mimickit had nothing better to do, and wanted to help. Herbs and medicines always fascinated Mimickit and she dreamed of being a medicine cat one day. It was way better than being a lousy warrior and she'd pick caring for the sick and mending the herbs over hunting and fighting any day.
"Excuse me," she loudly announced her arrival. The scent of herbs and fresh cobwebs and Hazelfoot herself seemed to be all too welcoming, compelling Mimickit's paws to pass through the entrance. In a kinder tone, she asked, "What are you doing? Let me help!" Well, the dull little she-kit may have said the last few words in a demanding way, but how else were she to catch this cat's attention? Her voice was so soft, and Hazelfoot looked busy enough that she would trample over Mimickit.
// @hazelfoot I am so sorry this took so long and that this is so bad.

Hazelfoot glanced up sharply as a strange scent penetrated the depths of her herb-dominated den, and it took her a moment to realise even which Clan her visitor belonged to, so accustomed had she become to the strong smelling herbs that she lived with day and night. It was a tradeoff though; the moment that she stepped out into the open air, the scents practically flooded her senses, sharp and exciting. The silver tabby finished what she was doing, depositing the small pile of leaves that she had in her mouth onto a stony ledge. "Hello." the medicine cat mewed cheerfully as the small cat made her way into the den, and she was just about to go on to say 'What can I do for you?' when the little she-cat told her.
Hazelfoot gave a slight mew of amusement at the small cat's demands, but she dipped her head in acquiescence, "I'm just sorting out some herbs." she explained. "If I leave them in one place for too long, then they can get stuck together or start to crumble, so I keep moving them around every so often." She glanced around, looking for something harmless, and found a pile of dock leaves. Indicating them with a tilt of the head, she directed: "Can you take those and put them on the ledge by the entrance?"

Hazelfoot let out some noise that proved she was amused by Mimickit's order. This won't do at all. Before Mimickit could tell her off, Hazelfoot began explaining what she was doing and why she was doing it. Mimickit listened intently, ears straining to catch each and every word, so that Mimickit may remember it, in case she needed it at a much later date. Hazelfoot asked her to do a simple task, Mimickit leaned in to see what it was.
Pleased to have something to do, a purpose, that would be acknowledged, Mimickit gently grabbed the herbs in her mouth and made her way to the entrance. The smell was tingling her nose. So this is what it must feel like, she thought as she found the ledge Hazelfoot mentioned. Going on her tip-toes to reach the ledge, she carefully placed them down. "Is there anything else?" She asked as she turned around, tail tip flicking.

As she put her mouth around another pile of herbs, these ones wrapped up in a large leaf since they were used to induce sickness which was something that the silver tabby could certainly do without today, Hazelfoot kept half an eye on the kit and was amused to notice how seriously Mimickit took the simple task; listening closely to the instructions that she was given. She did at least manage to get the herbs in the right spot, which was a lot more than some kits would have managed- Hazelfoot still remembered the time that a certain kit had dropped a bundle of herbs in the centre of the floor and laughed hysterically as the crumbled leaves spilled out all across the floor. She'd been picking them out of her fur for weeks afterwards.
And now she wanted another job! Most young cats would have lost concentration by this point. Hazelfoot glanced around her, and was struck by inspiration. "There's a patch of dock leaves growing by the entrance to camp." she told the kit. "They look like the ones that you've just been carrying- can you go and pick me a few, please?"

Mimickit tilted her head. Shall she be confused that Hazelfoot seemed full of energy all of a sudden, or happy to be getting so much attention? Either way, Hazelfoot instructed her another task and Mimickit was determined to do it. Dock leaves, just outside of the camp entrance. Exactly what I just carried, Mimickit kept her thoughts running to set a constant reminder; she didn't want to mess up. As she pranced out of the den with her tail high, she glanced at what the dock leaves looked like, making sure to remember it. She stalked through the camp, making her way to the entrance. She sniffed around with her jaws parted. She did not scent any cat. Quickly, she shot out of the entrance and glanced around.
Where are they?! Mimickit glanced around. Dock leaves, dock leaves..
There! Mimickit scrambled towards them, and carefully grabbed them. Holding them in her jaws, she ran towards the entrance, dropping a leaf or two on her way to Hazelfoot's den. Mimickit held the dock leaves the way she imagined an apprentice would hold their first catch, or how a queen would hold her first kit; she held them proudly, an almost smug expression on her face. She awaited for Hazelfoot's praise and approval.

Hazelfoot smiled to herself as she watched the kit vanish out of the den, a determined expression on her face. It did her good to see the energy which the young cat dedicated to each and every action- she only wished that she had such enthusiasm to put into her life. Sadly, the time when she could do that was past. Figuring that if she kept on stopping then she'd never be finished, the silver tabby sighed and continued moving herbs. Sage in one spot... Yarrow in the corner... Cobwebs in the hole by the door... These things had to be done, she knew, but they weren't exactly what she'd envisaged when she thought about the job of a medicine cat. Ah well, such was life. She would just keep on going.
And Mimickit was back already. Miracle of miracles, she even had the right herbs! It was a good job too; she'd been running rather low on dock leaves lately. It didn't help that she'd lost a load to rain damage the previous moon. "Well done, Mimickit!" the silver tabby praised with a low purr. This little cat impressed her; she had a better concentration even than Hazelfoot. "Put them where you put the others, would you?" She turned back to her work, confident that the kit knew where to put the herbs.

Mimickit gave a little nod as she was told to put the dock leaves where they belonged. She wasn't having the time of her life or anything--she doubted that she would live long enough to see such a period of time--but she wouldn't mind doing this more often. She decided, whether Hazelfoot liked it or not, Mimickit would have regular visits here. Praise felt like the green-leaf breeze on her face; uncommon yet equally pleasant. Being a kit, she obviously didn't go out much and instead suffered this cramped, claustrophobic camp.
It was a relatively simple job, she put the dock leaves where the rest of the dock leaves were, on the ledge by the entrance. Mimickit assumed she didn't understand the importance of her task because she had gotten praise as if she saved a life or something. "What's that for, anyway? The...the dock leaves?" She inquired, sitting and wrapping her tail around her paws. She occasionally tapped her tail tip on the ground as she awaited an answer from Hazelfoot, who she intently stared at with a stony gaze.

Hazelfoot took another look around her den, satisfied that everything was in place and tidied away- at least for now, though she doubted that it would last very long. A brisk flick of her tail swept a few stray leaves into the corner of her cosy little cavern, and then she was finished and ready to deal with anything that might come through her door- within reason, of course. Satisfied, she turned back to face her visitor- just in time to catch the little cat turning back to face her. Well, there was a coincidence. The kit was staring at her with an intensity which at first amused her, and then made the silver tabby feel a little uncomfortable. But then she asked a question, and Hazelfoot was happy to break the silence. "You can use them for a couple of things." she explained. "If you chew them up then you can use them on scratches- they sting a bit, though. Or you can use them in nests, and then since they're so big, you can use them for other things as well; carrying or wrapping things, and so on."

Mimickit's ears flicked as Hazelfoot began explaining. Her stone-like emerald gaze did not stray from the medicine cat for a heartbeat. When Hazelfoot seemed to be done with her listings, Mimickit narrowed her eyes. Her head tilted at an angle, she asked, "Why would you need to wrap things up? If you wrap up herbs won't they get mixed together?"
Mimickit stopped herself right there before she became too overbearing to the medicine cat. Her tail flicked in interest. Everything about this den seemed way more interesting and appealing than anything Mimickit was exposed to before. Caring for herbs and sick cats, organizing and keeping things in order...everything just seemed to click together perfectly. Perhaps that is why Mimickit didn't die of absolute boredom.

Hazelfoot watched the kit's reaction to her explanation. Judging by the cat's body language (even if it was in smaller print than usual), she was betting that there was going to be a question in a moment... and yes, she was right. The older cat cocked her head as she listened, and then purred quietly to herself. That was a very good question. "Yes, they usually will." Hazelfoot agreed. Sometimes that's why we do it- if we combine different herbs then they can have different properties. Sometimes, we do it because a cat has to have a lot of herbs all at once, and it doesn't matter if they get mixed up but it does make it easier to carry them around."

Mimickit's expression grew impossibly hard to read. Her whiskers quivered and an ear twitched. Flicking her tail, she finally looked up at Hazelfoot, not saying a word. Her emerald eyes shining brighter than the miserable green-leaf sun. Her lips stretched into a small frown as she asked, "How hard is it to be a medicine cat?" Her eyes seemed to flicker around the room, as if she was searching desperately for something, like the answer was hidden in the crevices of the strong-scented den. Was there more to being a medicine can than what met her eyes?
Mimickit fought back the instinctive eye roll. Of course there was. There may be more to anything than what meets the eye. But this..?

Hazelfoot was nosing around in the dark corners of her den, searching out disregarded leaves and berries which had fallen from a mouth or become separated from the correct pile during her reorganisation. Yes, maybe there were only one or two, but if they had a sudden epidemic then those one or two could mean the difference between life and death. OK, so it was unlikely, but her point remained. The silver tabby broke off her activity to respond to another question, and one which required some thought.
"Mostly, it's a matter of memory." the older cat explained. "Remembering what symptoms belong to what illnesses, or remembering what herbs you can use to treat them. But you also have to be good with cats- good at talking to them, listening to their problems." She paused to consider. "Really, it depends. Some cats are naturally good at those things, others have to work at it. Some simply can't do it. Why, do you think you'd like to be one one day?"

Green, dull eyes stared back, Mimickit lifeless as if she had frozen in place. She listened as she got a long answer that clearly took some thought to create. She blinked at tilted her head, sitting and wrapping her long little tail neatly around her paws. What was she to say at Hazelfoot's question? Growing tension between the two as the silence grew longer and longer, Mimickit's eyes flickered to occupy themselves with something fun-looking. "...I wouldn't mind, I guess." She finally mewed, eyes to the ground.
"I-I mean, there really isn't much else better to do, so.." Mimickit suddenly spat, meaning every little word. She didn't want Hazelfoot to get the wrong idea about her and honestly was feeling a bit defensive, for what, who knows.

Hazelfoot waited patiently as the silence stretched on... and on... and on... She was just wondering whether it was possible that the kit had actually drifted off to sleep when she finally spoke again, and Hazelfoot pricked her ears in anticipation. To be honest, however, she was disappointed by the reply. Mimickit had seemed quite enthusiastic earlier, and she had thought for a moment that she might be looking right at a potential future apprentice. But not if the kit was going to go around with that kind of attitude. Not only would it seriously tick off just about everyone, including Hazelfoot herself, it showed that Mimickit wouldn't have the absolute dedication that one had to have in this job.
