Birdpaw stalked quietly through the leaves, paws set down lightly. She held her breath, waiting, watching. The squirrel chirped occasionaly, running from tree to tree and looking for nuts. It picked on up in its tiny paws and started cracking it against a rock. Interesting, Birdpaw thought in her head, stepping forward a few paw steps. She winced when she heard the resounding crack of a stick and the squirrel sat bolt upright before making a run for it to the trees. Birdpaw sat up with a huff. "Mouse dung," she cursed, tail whipping to the side and anger. Her ears still twitched as she recorded the sound of the squirrel leaping from branch to branch in its haste to escape what it perceived as danger.
Birdpaw stood back up and stretched the kinks out of her back, exhausted from laying down so long. She yawned, looking around at where she was. I must be at Fir Forest. Birdpaw had been tracking the squirrel all day and had never bothered to check where she was going. I guess I better start heading back to camp. Birdpaw turned around and was shocked to find she ran straight into some other cat.

It's better to light a match than to curse the darkness

Hazelfoot seldom found herself outside the camp these days save to gather herbs, but the extreme tedium of her den had driven her out. She honestly couldn't stand another second of standing, sitting and lying around, staring at the wall. So here she was, just wandering around the forest. She had briefly considered hunting- it would lend a sense of purpose to her excursion- but honestly, she couldn't muster up the energy, the enthusiasm or the concentration to do so with any real rate of success. So she was simply walking with no purpose in mind. She might have been afraid that she would wander over the borders, except that her sense of smell would alert her before she got even within a hundred metres of the dividing line.
Hazelfoot was not, as might have been gathered, exactly paying attention to her surroundings. So it was probably at least in part her fault that she collided with the other cat as she rambled down towards the edge of the Fir Forest. That did not, however, change the fact that she shouldn't really have been sent flying by a collision with an apprentice. Yet there she was, lying on the ground and somewhat shocked.

Birdpaw jumped back, startled. "Oh! Hazelfoot!" Birdpaw exclaimed sharply. "I didn't realize you were..." she paused, voice fading away. Did Hazelfoot see what she was doing? Birdpaw bristled slightly at the thought before repressing her fears and relaxing her pelt. "I was just looking for some good prey to bring back to the camp," Birdpaw lied confidently. She then cocked her head to the side. "What are you doing out here?" she asked. "Are you hunting too?" In truth, Birdpaw recoiled at the thought of hunting and it made her feel sick inside. From her position on the floor, Hazelfoot tried her best to look dignified as she greeted the apprentice. "Hello, Birdpaw." She pulled herself slowly to her feet, shaking off any particles of leaf and mud that still clung to her long fur. "Did you catch anything good?" Of course, the tabby could see full well that the other cat hadn't in fact caught anything- unless she'd left it lying around somewhere- but she was still going to ask. Birdpaw might only have been an apprentice, but Hazelfoot would still assume that she was capable of catching something. So the only conclusion that remained to her was that the other cat hadn't really been hunting at all. Still, she wasn't going to pry.
