Silence filled the IvyClan camp the night, and the sounds of night-time insects and the breathing of sleeping warriors were all that could be heard. The sky was clear and the starlight turned the world a brilliant silver. Sitting just outside the entrance to the medicine den, Smokesight stared blankly up into the sky, a pained look on her face. She was so focused that some might think she saw something in the endless expanse of Silverpelt. She only wished that was the case. As always she saw only darkness. Of all the things she missed seeing, the comfort of the starry sky was at the top. Before her accident Silverpelt calmed her, brought her focus and made her feel close to her ancestors. She dug her claws into the dirt, fighting back the desire to wail into the nothingness that seemed to be her world. It had been just over four seasons since her accident, and yet it had gotten no better. She still expected to open her eyes to sunlight filtering into the den, with fellow warriors around her. At the very least she expected it to get easier. It did not. She tucked her head against her chest, a soft whimper escaping her. She was so tired of the pain. "What did I do, StarClan?" She hiccuped sadly as she brought her tail protectively around herself, wanting nothing more than to fade away at that moment, "Why did this have to happen?" She knew that she still had a place among her clanmates and yet she felt so empty, like her life had been stolen and she hadn't even received the blessing of joining her ancestors to watch over the forest. She longed for a cat whose words didn't drip with pity when they saw her. Even kits that she had helped to raise began to pity her when they found out the truth of her state.

Burnkit chased after Moonkit into the camp clearing. "Wait up!" She cried. Moonkit simply glanced over her shoulder at Burnkit's slower pace. She stopped when she noticed Smokesight sitting by the medicine cat's den. Burnkit ran into her. "Why'd you stop?" The ginger kit demanded. Moonkit shook her head and stared at the blind cat. When Burnkit saw what she was looking at, her gaze softened. "Oh," Burnkit murmured solemnly, feeling bad for the cat. Moonkit stepped away from Burnkit and trotted to the other calico. "Hi, Smokesight!" Moonkit yelped cheerfully, making her presence known. Burnkit stepped to her side following suit. "Are you ok? Do you need company?" Burnkit asked, voice thick with pity. Moonkit however did not have a trace of pity in her. What cat would want that, it would only further isolate them. "Do you to play mossball with us? Or some other game?" Moonkit asked with a bounce, her voice excited.

Smokesight was surprised when the voices of young kits rang from nearby. She looked toward where she expected the pair to be, forcing a smile. Even a kit as young as Burnkit took pity on her, and that stung more than she would like to admit. Sniffing, she located the pair and licked Moonkit on top of her head, though the kit's bounce nearly caused them to bump heads. "I would love to play with you," she purred, "But mossball is very hard for me to play, since I can't see it." She couldn't help but admit that she doted on Moonkit, as the young kit didn't speak to her the way every other cat did. It was refreshing. She touched her nose to the top of Burnkit's head, knowing that the kit meant no harm with her words. "What are you too doing out of the nursery so late anyway?" She asked, scolding slightly, "Shouldn't you two be resting so you can grow into big strong warriors?"

"That's what I said!" Burnkit yelped, shooting a harsh glare to Moonkit. "That what you always want to do," Moonkit growled. "I'm trying to get Burnkit to have fun. And what better way than going out at night!" Moonkit squealed. "Then what game do you want to play?" Moonkit asked, changing the subject. Burnkit looked back to Smokesight. Burnkit wasn't sure she wanted to play with the blind cat, what if she accidentally got hurt. Then the warriors might blame her and she could be held back as an apprentice. Burnkit pushed these thoughts out of her head. On the other hand, Moonkit had her own thoughts to think about. The reason Moonkit didn't pity Smokesight because she knew what it was like to be different. The secret kept building up inside of her, worry about what would happen if other cats knew she couldn't feel pain. All Moonkit knew was she would hate if other cats pitied her and treated her differently because of her condition, so she refused to do that to Smokesight.

"Well, I'm willing to make an exception just this once," the torbie purred, "So why don't we play hide and seek. I bet I could still find you even without my eyes. A true warrior uses all their senses to track." Smokesight got to her feet and shook out her pelt. She had always been very good at hide and seek as a kit, however, that had been when her eyesight had been exceptional. She was fairly certainshe could handle tracking a few kits. She was always surprised at how serious Burnkit could be, thougj. She joked to herself that not even Frostflower or Laurelheart could have been this serious at such a young age, but then wondered if perhaps they had been. "You know Burnkit, playing is an important part of being a kit," She mewed thoughtfully, "Its how you get strong, and start to learn. Believe it or not, Moonkit has the right idea."

Burnkit grumbled something under her breath. She didn't want to play, she'd rather pick ticks off the elders! At least she'd be doing something for her clan instead of wasting her time with useless play. Moonkit bounced up and down excitedly. "Yay!" She squealed. "You count, we'll go hide. And no peeking! Come on," she growled to Burnkit, dragging her behind. Burnkit groaned, racing after the overexcited kit. Moonkit shuffled underneath a bush, slowing her breathing so as not to be heard while Burnkit looked around wildly for her hiding spot. Burnkit opted to crouch behind the fresh-kill pile hoping, using her small size to duck out of sight.

With a low chuckle, Smokesight listened to the kits scamper off. Dramatically covering her sightless eyes, she counted aloud. When she reached 10, she drew in the scents of the air deeply, catching hints of both kits. She went down into a hunters crouch, letting her instincts lead her. She crawled forward, following the scent of the kits until it diverged into two trails. She paused to listen, but couldn't yet hear their breathing. Following the scent of Burnkit, she tried to picture hiding spots she had used when she was a child. She was drawing a blank until the nearing scent of fresh prey caused her mouth to water. Had the young kit hidden at its base? Her scent was much harder to distinguish here, making it difficult to be certain as she slowly circled the pile, listening for the young cat's heartbeat like she would a mouse.

Burnkit stood really still, not even daring to breath though her mouth did water at being so close to the prey pile. She had chosen this hiding spot, hoping the smell of prey would hide her own scent, confusing Burnkit. Moonkit on the other hand had thorn snagging her fur and causing little scratches and cuts. She didn't notice how blood began to seep out. She only watches as Smokesight grew closer to Burnkit, her heart thudding in her chest.

Smokesight's ears perked up suddenly as she caught the sound of a tiny heart beat. Her whiskers twitched and she inhaled deeply, but still struggled in distinguishing the tiny kit. She circled closely now, trying not to admit she was getting a little frustrated. She had already been feeling the weight of her blindness like the world atop her thin shoulders, but now she couldn't even locate one kit? The one good thing that had come from her loss of sight was that now her other senses were becoming even sharper. She could typically smell or hear most of the comings and goings in the camp, and anything going on in the main clearing, assuming she was actually listening. Often she tuned it all out, since the static could be overpowering. Now she was forced to let it all in. Still Burnkit's scent was smothered by the prey. She knew she was getting close though. Another deep breath and she jerked her head sharply in alarm as the scent of fresh blood caught her. Little did she know Burnkit sat only a mouselength from her, as she raced off toward the scent. As she grew closer, she realized the scent belonged to Moonkit and horror began pulsing through her. "Moonkit!" She called and she tried to push her head into the bush that radiated the young kit's scent, "Moonkit, are you alright?" She hissed softly as a branch scratched the tip of her nose but pushed on anyway until her nose bumped something small, furry and warm.

Moonkit jolted back, surprised by Smokesight's alarm. She squirmed from underneath her bush to give herself a quick check over at all the scratches crisscrossing her back. She felt slightly embarrassed at her foolishness and lack of being careful. She was just so excited by the game she forgot. It was then that Burnkit bounded from her hinding place, scared for her injured and bloodied friend. "What happened!" Burnkit gasped, sniffing her all over. Moonkit pushed her away. "I'm fine, just a few scratches." "You don't look fine!" Burnkit accused. Moonkit groaned, she was touched by her caring, but sometimes Burnkit went overboard.

Sniffing along the young kit's back as the two kits conversed, she carefully licked away the blood, suddenly wishing she could see just how bad the scratches were. "Do they burn or just sting?" Smokesight asked, hoping to judge the severity from her response, "Maybe we should go see Laurelheart." She felt a sudden stab of guilt deep in her chest. If she were a proper queen she would have ushered the pair off to bed, not played a game where they could so easily be hurt just to prove she was still capable! She turned her head toward the Medicine Den, her ears flattened against her head and tail fluffed out. The idea that she couldn't even tend to kits sent a tremor of fear down her spine. If she couldn't even do this, what use was she?

Moonkit squirmed under Smokesight's tongue, and pulled back. "They just sting," she lied. Inwardly she was scolding herself, she would let another mishap like this happen again. Next time she'd check the bush for thorns first. Burnkit watched her friend with worried eyes. "Maybe you should see the medicine cat?" She suggested. Moonkit brightened at the thought. Of course! Laurelheart would help. Of all the cats in camp, he was the only one who knew Moonkit's secret. She trusted him. "That's a great idea," Moonkit agreed. She turned around and made a show of limping toward the medicine den due to the long scratch on one of her forelegs. She leaned all her weight on the opposite side.
(I've messaged Leopard so Laurelheart can help)

Smokesight followed the kits, well knowing the path to the medicine cat's den. She still felt a horrible sense of guilt about letting this happened but began to be distracted by the stinging in her nose. While there the medicine cat could take a look at it for her. And her eyes. They ached like she had been staring into the sun all day. Perhaps she had been, one cooler days it was harder for her to tell when it was day or night. It was frustrating to know that while no damage had been done to her eyes in the accident, they seemed to continue deteriorating, and her agonizing headaches often left her bedridden in the darkest corner of the herb scented nest. Her distraction caused her to ignore the sudden warning her whiskers gave her and she bumped her already sore nose into the corner of the entrance to the den.

Laurelheart weaved his way out from the sheltered space under the log. The branches piled up to protect the elders from the worst of the cold and wet tugged at his pelt, catching a few strands of white fur as he padded out into the main camp. A faint scent of juniper and ragwort leaves clung to him like burrs. For a moment he just basked in the soft night-time rustlings. At this time of night the camp was deserted with cats asleep or out on patrols; the only sign of movement was a cat-sized shape and two more in miniature heading in the direction of his den. He couldn’t call out to them and risk waking his clanmates so he trotted over to them.
“Smokesight, Moonkit, Burnkit." He dipped his head. "Is everything okay?”
He was close enough to make them out now, from Smokesight's clouded eyes to the small scratches along Moonkit’s back. He sighed. Any other kit would get stung once and never play with a bee again yet without pain to deter Moonkit there was only words to deter her and too often it seemed his warnings fell on deaf ears.
“What did I tell you about staying away from the thorns?” He said harshly. “Come on in, we’ll get you fixed up.”

Moonkit ducked her head ashamedly. "I didn't realize," she murmured. "In the dark it just looked like a regular, harmless bush." She trotted after Laurelheart, Burnkit clinging to her side like a burr, fretting over her. "You're gonna be okay," Burnkit purred though Moonkit wasn't sure if the reassurance was for her or Burnkit. Though at least one good thing came from this experience, she would always check to see if a bush was dangerous before crawling under it. Once she was under, she would have no idea if thorn were pricking her skin like any normal cat. "Burnkit, I'm going to be fine," Moonkit growled more harshly than she intended, Burnkit didn't seem to notice and continued on with her chant of "You're gonna be okay". Moonkit sat down in the medicine den calmly, ready to be treated. Unlike most kits, she had no fear of what was to come, herbs could never sting her wounds. All she had to do was fake pain for a show to make Smokesight and Burnkit believe she was like any normal cat.
